Chico's Blake Moss has set himself apart from most golfers. The junior proved that it only takes two tournaments to make it to the high school state golf championships.
However, not many athletes are like the talented Moss. He broke his arm during basketball season and missed the entire preseason of golf.
Moss was free of casts and splits a week before the District 9-2A tournament. Despite the pain he is dealing with in his wrist because of the injury, he decided to try to putt at the district finals. He finished third overall at that event and was first among the individual medalists to earn a surprise trip to regionals.
The Dragon standout was not finished. He not only made the trip to the Class 2A, Region II tournament in Stephenville last week a success, he also achieved a rare milestone. Moss sank a hole-in-one on the final round which catapulted him to another first-place performance in the individual standings to earn a trip to state next Monday and Tuesday in Austin.
"It hurts, that's for sure," said Moss. "I'm playing a little better than I thought I would this soon from getting back into golf. I'll just keep taking Advil and hope my wrist doesn't bother me too much."
Moss, who is left-handed, broke his left arm during a basketball game in January. The setback has not affected his game at all.
Moss carded a 78 in the first round of the regional tournament and was in sixth place. He stepped up like a champion on the final day to move up in the standings to secure his state trip.
His ace on the 11th hole was the cincher. Moss used a 7-wood on the 185-yard par 3 to sink his first career hole-in-one.
There are no records that indicate Moss's milestone was a first, but tournament officials do not remember an ace ever recorded on the course during the regional tournament.
The Dragon standout dominated in the final round where he carded a one-over par 73 on the final day to finish with a regional total of 151.
Now he hopes the third tournament of his season is a charm.
"I need to get better on my short game," he said. "But I'm doing OK. I'll just do my best and see what happens."
