All the rain and snow this spring has caused several cancellations on the court for the Bridgeport High School tennis team. Therefore, coach Chelia Demmitt rearranged all the makeup matches against Decatur, Bowie and Sanger in one day last week in what looked like a tournament.
It made for a busy day for Bridgeport on Tuesday but it ended on a successful note. The group defeated Bowie (5-4) and Decatur (5-2) and split with Sanger (3-3) to complete the non-district schedule.
In a showdown between local rivals, Bridgeport won five of seven matches against Decatur. Decatur came out on top in mixed doubles where Cassie Shenkir and Josh Martinez beat Kaitlyn Waynen and Jared Hudson 8-1.
The Eagles also won a thrilling final in the No. 1 boys' single contest. That's where Matt Amos held off a quick start by Gideon Logan to take an 8-5 win.
The girls' No. 1 contest was a rematch from two weeks ago when Decatur's Mallory Johnson beat Micaela White. White did not let history repeat as she cruised to an 8-2 win.
Bridgeport won the other four matches of the day. The boys' doubles team of Daniel Scott and Ryan Robinson defeated James Mason and David Murphree 8-2.
The Sissies swept the girls' doubles. Becca Logan and Meagan Tucker beat Cynthia Carrillo, while Taylor McDonald and Katherine Weaver edged Jessica Anderson and Katie Tuttle.
The tandem of Ashley Watkins and Jerry Ibanez held on for an 8-5 win over Sharly Evans and Chistopher Caballero.
Bridgeport was solid in singles play against Bowie as it won all four matches. Logan won the only contest on the boys side with an 8-5 win over Chad Tyson.
Shannon Demmitt led the way for the Sissies as she won twice. The junior cruised to an 8-1 win over Taylor Whatley and also beat Katie Stallcup 8-4.
White won once again as she defeated Kara Stuckey 8-2 in the No. 1 singles match.
Bowie swept the girls doubles. Logan and Tucker fell to Tori Hendon and Tiffany Sappington 8-4, while McDonald and Weaver dropped an 8-2 decision.
The Jackrabbits also won both matches in mixed doubles when Hudson and Waynen lost 8-0 to Ashley Aujla and Ethan Adams, and Watkins and Ibanez fell 8-4 to Conner Floyd and Ben Sledge.
Bridgeport had its hands full against Sanger. The group swept the girls singles and won in mixed doubles to split the match 3-3.
White took care of Jinnie Pratt (8-2) and Demmitt beat Katie Crutsinger in girls' singles, while Waynen and Hudson tallied an 8-5 win over Cheyenne Kimmell and Derek Guebert.
