Freshman earns trip to regionals and leads team to second place

If this season is just the beginning of things for Bridgeport High School tennis standout Micaela White, it's going to be a long and successful journey.

The freshman has won nearly every match this season and was just as impressive at her first district meet last week. The freshman newcomer not only helped lead her team to a second-place finish but she also took second individually to earn a trip to next week's Class 3A, Region I tournament in Odessa.

White is the only Wise County netter to advance out of district this season, and it didn't come easy as she battled in a pair of tough matches.

Argyle, which won the team title, had it's No. 2 player Erin O'Connor take on White in the first round of action. It proved to be the tightest match of the tournament for the BHS star as she rallied after a slow start for a (5-7), 6-2, 6-0 victory.

White moved on to face Mallory Johnson, Decatur's No. 1 singles player. The Sissie was in top form as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 decision and a trip to the title match.

That's where White faced Catherine Pettibon, the top player from Argyle. Pettibon won several deuce points to stop the BHS newcomer 6-0, 6-1.

"That match was a lot closer than the score might lead you to believe. It was filled with great shots and multiple deuce points," said BHS coach Cheila Demmitt. "Micaela has had an outstanding season, and her teammates and I wish her all the best as she travels to Odessa."

Shannon Demmitt, Bridgeport's No. 2 singles player, was seeded fourth in the tournament and finished in that spot. She had her hands full in the semifinals where she battled eventual champion Pettibon through several long rallies before falling 6-2, 6-3.

The loss put Demmitt in the third-place match where she faced Johnson. The match took nearly two hours to finish before the Lady Eagle came out on top 6-2, 6-1.

Demmitt opened the tournament by handily defeating Pilot Point's Kara Webster 6-2, 6-2. She then beat Sanger's Katie Crutsinger 6-0, 6-4 to move on to the semis.

The doubles team of Becca Logan and Maegan Tucker defeated Gainesville in the first round 6-1, 6-2, but were edged out by Sanger 7-6, (7-9), 6-4. The tandem of Taylor McDonald and Katherine Weaver came up short in the first round where they lost to Whitesboro 6-2, 6-1.

"Becca and Megan really improved this year and complement each other on the court," said Demmitt. "Taylor and Katherine are first-year players and new to the game. Nonetheless, they did a fine job as our No. 2 team this year."

Bridgeport was unable to land a victory in mixed doubles play. Kaitlyn Waynen and Jared Hudson fell to Whitesboro 6-1, 6-2, while the team of Ashley Watkins and Jerry Ibanez lost 6-1, 6-1.

"Kaitlyn and Jared really improved this year, and I hope they stick with it and work hard for next season," said Demmitt. "Ashley and Jerry had a great match and there were some incredible rallies in the match, and just an inch here or there really made a difference."

In boys' singles action, No. 1 Gideon Logan had his hands full with Gainesville's ace Deven Garrett. The BHS standout was unable to win enough rally points in a 6-1, 6-2 defeat.

The Bulls' top doubles team of Daniel Scott and Ryan Robinson had a little success. The duo was crisp in taking care of Gainesville in a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

They went on to face the eventual district doubles champions from Argyle. That was a big challenge as they lost a 6-0, 6-0 decision.
