2007 Northwest High School graduate and current University of Texas pitcher Brittany Barnhill has accomplished quite a bit in her career. She shattered the state record for career strikeouts, was named all-state three times and was the 2007 Gatorade Player of the Year.
When it came time for the eight baseball coaches of District 8-3A to meet and vote on this year's all-district team, it was no surprise that Decatur and Bridgeport high schools were well represented.
Decatur baseball coach Chris Carter knew his team had to play nearly perfect baseball over the weekend to have a chance at knocking off state-ranked Lubbock Cooper. That didn't happen, but nothing came easy for the Pirates in the best-of-three series at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
Sanger baseball coach Tracy Howard told reporters after his team was eliminated by Decatur Saturday afternoon in Lake Dallas that it is hard to beat the same team four times in one season. He was making reference to his team beating the Eagles twice during the regular season before getting swept in the Class 3A regional quarterfinal series over the weekend.
The Alvord and Chico high school softball teams had very similar seasons. They were both in the thick of the playoff race until the final week of the season.
While waiting for the Alvord/Peaster playoff game to finish before taking the field Friday in Mineral Wells, a member of the Clyde High School baseball coaching staff explained to one of his players that Decatur was "lucky" to be in the playoffs. He went on to explain that Decatur had to win its last game of the year to "sneak" in.
For five innings Friday night at Birdville High School, the Northwest softball team flirted with disaster. Its opportunistic offense had disappeared in the Class 5A area championship game against Arlington.
The Alvord High School baseball team cruised through district play because of a balanced attack - stellar pitching, dangerous hitting and pesky defense.
The Northwest and Carrollton Creekview softball teams finished district play on different notes. The Lady Texans lost their only 5-5A game and played just well enough to close out with a win, while the Mustangs finished strong to steal the fourth and final playoff spot in District 6-5A.
