Alvord wins and loses in 24 hours

The Alvord High School baseball team did a little bit of everything last week in its first two district games of the season. The group had big hits, untimely errors and got solid pitching and it all resulted in a win and a loss.

The Bulldogs committed too many errors to come out on top in the 9-2A opener in an 8-1 loss to Holliday. Just 24 hours later, the Bulldogs made up for miscues with blistering hitting which made the difference in a 9-8 win over Nocona.

Clayton Shaw beat up on the Indian pitching staff as he blasted a pair of doubles to lead the offense. Ross Houston, Hagen Ward, Shane Watkins and Trevor Hahn also scattered two hits in the victory.

Alvord finished with five hits that fell for extra bases. Colton Oldham, Justin Meador and Houston blasted solo doubles. Meador's blast knocked in two runs which helped his team rally from a 5-2 deficit in the fourth inning.

Asa Hand picked up the win on the mound where he moved his record to 3-0 for the year. He struck out nine batters, gave up nine hits and walked six.

The Bulldogs moved to 3-7 for the year and 1-1 in district play. Nocona slipped to 0-2 in district action.

Errors kept Alvord out of the game against Holliday. The locals committed seven errors and never recovered in an 8-1 loss.

Hahn took the loss on the hill. He threw 44 strikes in 83 pitches, struck out four batters and allowed just five hits and two walks.

Watkins had the biggest hit of the game when he ripped a double. Hand picked up the RBI to erase the shutout and put Alvord on the scoreboard.
