Fielding woes lead to another loss for Decatur

The growing pains continued at home Friday for the Decatur High School baseball team. This time, however, it was a little more costly as the breakdown came in a district game against Pilot Point.

The Eagles, who got another solid pitching performance from Tyler Robbins, committed a season-high eight errors. The miscues allowed the Bearcats to score five unearned runs and hand Decatur a 7-6 loss.

The loss dropped the two-time defending district champions to 7-8 for the year, but more importantly, 1-2 in District 8-3A play.

Chad Harrison accounted for two of his team's six hits. The junior helped put his team ahead early as Decatur scored twice in its first at-bat and once in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Pilot Point, however, took advantage of fielding mistakes all night - two came in the third inning. A double by Ethan Stucky along with the errors allowed the visitors to punch three runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles had an answer as they scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to move back in front 6-4. That was the end of the scoring for DHS. The Bearcats tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning and scored the game winner in the last frame.

Decatur had its share of offensive highlights. Brennan Moore and Justin Tompkins both smacked home runs, while Colton Cangley continued his offensive tear with a double.

Despite giving up just two earned runs, Robbins took the loss on the mound for the Eagles. He surrendered six hits and struck out eight batters.

The Eagles evened their record on Saturday in another game that went down to the last inning. They scored the game winner in the seventh inning to squeak by Lake Worth 5-4.

Robbins, Tompkins and Cangley were lethal at the plate where they each went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Jake Connally went four innings and allowed three runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Tompkins got the win in three innings of work and allowed no runs on two hits and two strikeouts.
