Eagles get back to .500 mark

The Decatur High School baseball team is hoping the final week of the season before District 8-3A play is enough time to improve defensively. The locals got their chance at last weekend's American Cancer Society Tournament in Windthorst.

Despite an extended break because of the snow that hit the area Thursday, the Eagles bounced back on limited practice to win two games in the event. They did not get an error-free game, but did hit the ball well enough and got good pitching to get back to winning.

They ended the tournament with a come-from-behind win over district foe Pilot Point. Decatur scored three runs in the fourth inning to rally from a two-run deficit to take a 6-4 win.

The win, which pushed DHS to 6-6 for the season, was made possible by a solid pitching performance from Tim Metts. The sophomore gave up just one earned run on four hits and three strikeouts in five innings of work.

The Bearcats managed two unearned runs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. DHS cut it in half with a solo run in the third and evened the game in the fourth. Two solo hits in the fourth and fifth innings were just enough to get the decision.

Andrew Gage was solid at the plate where he went 3-for-3 and scored a run. Ryan Cangley and Zach Gage also dished out a pair of hits to lead the offense. Tyler Robbins and Cangley smacked doubles in the assault.

The Eagles got a sneak preview into one of their new district rivals starting next year when they faced Vernon. After falling behind 1-0 and 2-1 early in the game, their bats finally came alive to spark a 7-3 victory.

Justin Tompkins had the biggest hit of the night when he blasted a home run in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. He finished with three RBI and two runs scored.

Colton Cangley went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of runs, while Ryan Cangley and Robbins also scored runs and ripped singles.

Jake Connally got the win on the mound where she went a little more than four innings and allowed no earned runs and had three strikeouts.

Decatur came out short against Gunter. The Tigers were only able to score in the first inning but that was enough in a 4-3 final.

Gunter turned two errors into three runs to get past Decatur. DHS pitcher Clint Moore allowed just one earned run on five hits and two strikeouts.

Ryan Cangley beat up on the Tigers' pitcher as he had three hits, one run and one RBI. Tompkins went 2-for-3 at the plate.
