Lady Bulldogs take the gold

It's clear that the Alvord High School softball team is not satisfied with second best. The group took second place at its own tournament two weeks ago but did even better last weekend in Perrin Whitt.

The Lady Bulldogs proved that it's not how you start things, but rather how you finish. After suffering a pair of one-run losses on the first day, they bounced back to beat Peaster, Paradise and Dublin to win the championship.

The tournament title was made possible with several big performances from the team. However, Leslie Hampton, Courtney Hopkins, Whitney Enis and Ainsley Shaffer were recognized for their efforts as they were named to the all-tournament team.

The foursome played a key role in winning the title game. They helped turn a close game into a one-sided championship as they beat Dublin 11-2.

After two scoreless innings, Alvord finally got on the scoreboard when Enis smacked a two-run single to left field to make it a 2-0 ball game. She later scored on a single by Maddison Kinsey to make it 3-0.

Dublin scored once in the next inning but Alvord had an answer. The locals scored eight runs in the last three innings to pull away.

Enis had a lot to do with it as she had two singles and a double in her final three at-bats and scored all three times. Kinsey also ripped two doubles in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Lady Bulldogs made it to the title game by beating Paradise 4-3. They did all the damage in the second inning where they punched in all four runs, which proved to be just enough.

Hopkins and Kinsey hit one-out singles and soon scored on a two-run single by Hampton. Enis made Paradise pay for two walks later when she blasted a two-out, two-run single to right field to make it 4-0.

The Lady Panthers nearly evened things up when they scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Candace McDaniel ripped an RBI single to score Emily Fuller who had walked.

McDaniel quickly scored on a double by Ashley Welborn to make it a 4-2 contest. Paradise added one unearned run with two outs to make it a 4-3 game.

The Lady Bulldogs were tested in the first game of the last day against Peaster. They rallied from two runs down in the last inning by scoring three times to sneak by with a 6-5 win.

Hopkins crushed an RBI single to make things closer. Holly Harris singled and later scored to make it a 6-5 contest and her team held on for the thrilling win.
