After a rough preseason that saw the Bridgeport High School baseball team lose some close games, things have started to turn around for the club. The group proved it this week with a pair of wins over Whitesboro and Pilot Point to begin District 8-3A play.
The Bulls manufactured more than a dozen runs on just eight eights Tuesday night to get a 13-8 win over Whitesboro. Three of those blasts fell for doubles by Corbin Green, Chase Pemberton and Mason Bridwell.
Bridgeport jumped all over the Bearcats early and never trailed after the first inning. Whitesboro scored twice in its first at-bat to take a shortlived 2-0 lead.
The locals, who got two hits, three runs and four RBI from James Kilpatrick, scored five runs in the first inning to take the lead for good. Bridgeport followed with solo runs in the second and third innings and three each in the fourth and fifth frames to take a 13-6 lead.
Bridwell finished with a team-high five RBI and a triple. Kilpatrick had the deepest hit when he ripped a home run to left field.
Pitcher Bryant Daniel, who took over on the hill in the third inning, picked up with the win for the Bulls. He allowed just one run on two hits and struck out three. It was also his first win of the season.
Bridgeport won a slugfest at Pilot Point on Tuesday. The locals accounted for 19 of the 35 base hits in the game to hold on for a 16-13 victory.
After trailing 2-1 after the first inning, the Bulls erupted for five runs in the second and fourth innings and never trailed again. The game was tied at 12-12 but BHS scored four in the eighth inning to get the decision.
The Bulls offensive showcase featured doubles by Colter Henderson, Cameron Green, Corbin Green, Pemberton and Bridwell. Both Bridwell and Pemberton went 4-for-6 at the plate and scored two runs each.
Corbin Green took over on the mound in the fifth inning and picked up the win. He allowed five runs onn seven hits and struck out four batters. Daniel threw the first three innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits and fanned three batters.
The Bulls are now 2-0 in district play and 5-6 overall.
