Weather played havoc on the Boyd High School softball team's playing time last week. This week, however, it was Millsap and Brock wrecking havoc on the locals.
The Lady Yellowjackets have plenty of catching up to do after just two District 10-2A games. They came up short offensively in both games despite good defense and suffered back-to-back losses to start league play.
Millsap delivered the upset in the district opener Tuesday night. After fighting from behind and tying the score 2-2 in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs scored their last two runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 4-3 decision.
"This was the first game we played in two weeks and we started rusty," said BHS coach Brandon Hopkins. "We did not hit the ball like we needed to"
Baylie Moran and April Mandel did not lack any offense. The senior duo who will be playing college ball next year both went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored once.
Amanda Williams had the hardest hit ball of the day as she ripped a two-run double. Jacklyn Fowler had an RBI single to complete the hitting for Boyd.
Kylie Lobdell took the loss in the circle where she allowed two earned runs on 10 hits and had one strikeout.
The Lady Yellowjackets had their hands full 24 hours later when they traveled to Brock, the ninth-ranked team in the state. The game was knotted at 1-1 in the fourth inning before the Eagles changed the pace of the game.
Brock, which dished out 9 hits, got six of them in the bottom of the fourth inning where it pushed four runs across home plate to make it a 4-1 game.
"We hit the ball hard, it's just that a lot of our balls did not find the holes," said Hopkins. "We played good defense. There was just one inning that Brock strung together some hits that got us."
The Lady Yellowjackets finished with eight hits for the night but not enough in the same inning to make up for Brock's big inning. Mandel had the hardest hit of the day when she smacked a solo home run.
Fowler had the best da she went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Morgan also scattered a pair of base hits.
Lobdell took the loss for Boyd in six innings of work. She surrendered nine hits, four earned runs and had no strikeouts.
"Brock is state ranked and we played them toe to toe," Hopkins said. "Our district is very solid this year and there are a number of teams that can make the playoffs but only three will go."
