First-year Decatur High School baseball coach Chris Carter is still waiting for his team to show some defensive consistency. His crew is averaging three errors a game which has been the toughest thing to overcome through one month of the season.
The Eagles committed six mistakes Wednesday night at Gainesville. However, they decided to make up for miscues by littering the field with base hits and it worked in an 11-5 victory.
The offensive production was contagious as Decatur pounced on 15 hits for the night. The performance at the plate led to three runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings which was more than enough to make sure the Leopards never led in the game.
Colton Cangley had a lot to do with the offensive showcase. He got the first of his three hits in the first inning to put his team ahead 3-0 before GHS ever got a chance to bat. He finished with three RBI, two singles and a double.
The Eagles worked a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning before defensive mistakes gave Gainesville some hope. Four runs in the bottom of the inning, three of which were unearned, cut the DHS lead to two at 7-5.
The game was never closer. Decatur followed with one run in the fifth inning and added three more on its final at-bat.
Chad Harrison had the hardest hit of the night when he jumped all over a two-run home run for one of his two hits on the night. Justin Robbins and Justin Tompkins also went 2-for-4 at the plate. He also drove in a run with a double.
Cangley got the win on the hill for the Eagles. He threw all seven innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts.
The win made up for a district-opening loss to Whitesboro the day before. The Bearcats scored twice in the first inning and never trailed in a 4-3 win over DHS.
The Eagles struggled at the plate where they finished with just three hits. Cangley had two of them, one of which was a double that scored Tompkins.
Cangley also took the loss on the mound where he held Whitesboro to just four hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out 10 batters.
Decatur, now 1-1 in District 8-3A and 7-7 for the year, will try to get back on track next week with a pair of games.
