Decatur blasts district foes

There was no shortage of offense this week for the Decatur High School softball team. The crew combined for 28 hits in two games against Gainesville and Whitesboro, which led to a pair of easy wins.

The first of the offensive showcases was Tuesday night in Gainesville. Five players had at least two hits and the Lady Eagles were hardly tested in an 11-4 win.

"This was our best game so far. We hit the ball extremely well and played sound defense," said DHS coach Scott McTee. "We got good pitching as well. This is exactly what we needed to do. I'm really proud of the way our girls played tonight. They had fun and were fun to watch."

Shortstop Lacey Oates, who has been frustrated by her hitting lately, made up for lost time. The senior, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two stolen bases, helped score the first seven runs of the game.

Decatur, which led 7-0 in the fourth inning, saw the Leopards get their only big inning of the night. They scored all four runs in the bottom half of the frame to make it a 7-4 ball game.

The Lady Eagles answered immediately. They scored six runs in the next three innings to pull away for good. DHS pitcher Megan Dittrich allowed just two earned runs and struck out eight to keep the GHS bats quiet.

Dittrich also helped her team offensively and she crushed her first triple of the season which scored two runs. Lyndsey Hicks, J.J. Addington and Mercy Staley were also lethal with a bat as they each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Decatur never cooled off offensively and Whitesboro paid the price Thursday night. Five players had at least two hits for the second straight game and the Bearcats never had a chance in a 13-0 DHS road win.

Dittrich kept the Bearcat bats quiet all night. She allowed just two hits and struck out five and her team was solid defensively behind her from start to finish to get the shutout.

Hicks, who had a big night with a triple, a double and three RBI, ignited a seven-run second inning that made things ugly in a hurry. DHS went on to score two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run mercy rule.

Kayla Slimp, Staley, Oates and Dittrich all went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double each.

"We played great today. Our hitting was outstanding from top to bottom and our defense did everything we could ask of them," said McTee. "Our patience at the plate and aggressiveness paid off at the plate and in the infield. Addington called a great game at catcher and Megan put the pitches where they needed to be. This is truly a game we can build on as we continue our district season."

The Lady Eagles are now 3-0- in District 8-3A play and 9-7 overall.
