Big hits lead Decatur past Bridgeport

The Decatur High School baseball team has had its share of problems to work out this season. One thing that has been fairly consistent, however, is its ability to hit the ball. The group did plenty of it Friday night in Bridgeport.

The Eagles were not fazed by the Bulls' impressive start to district play. They littered the field with 11 base hits and never trailed en route to a 7-2 victory.

Decatur put sprinkled hits in all parts of the field and nearly half of them were doubles. Five of the nearly dozen hits fell for extra bases in clutch situations.

That was the difference. Despite just six base hits, the Bulls were unable to string many of theirs together.

After holding on to first place for the first two weeks, Bridgeport is now tied for second place with Decatur at 4-3. Both will start the second half of District 8-3A play on Friday where all three playoffs spots remain up for grabs.

The game was knotted at 1-1 after one inning of play Tuesday. That was as close as it got for Bridgeport as DHS's big hitters created havoc for the Bulls.

The bottom of the batting order took aim at the Bridgeport defense in the top of the second inning. They pushed three runs across home plate for the only other runs they needed to move ahead 4-1.

The game was scoreless through the next two innings as DHS pitcher Justin Tompkins and BHS hurler Cameron Green went at it. Decatur ended the silence with solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames to tame a 6-1 lead.

The Bulls, who had not scored since their first at bat, tallied their final run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Cory Henson. That scored Corbin Green to make it a 6-2 ball game.

Decatur punched in one more run for good measure in the seventh. DHS pitcher Tyler Robbins closed the game in the bottom half of the inning to get the save.

Robbins was also the leader behind the plate where he smacked two doubles for the night. Brennan Moore, Zach Gage and Tompkins also laced doubles in the victory.

"Our defense played well but Decatur put together 11 hits through seven innings and that was the difference," said BHS coach John Ward.

Bridgeport's only extra base hit came from Ricky Martinez but he was stranded in scoring position.

The Eagles played a non-district game Saturday in Burkburnett where they met up with their future district foe. They were crisp once again on offense where they dished out nine hits, three that fell for extra bases, on their way to a 9-6 victory.

Decatur fell behind 3-1 after three innings but found some life in the top of the fourth. The locals scored seven runs on five hits and never trailed again after moving ahead 7-3.

Moore and Robbins had doubles for the second straight game and Chad Harrison had a home run.

Jake Connally left the game after three innings but got the win. Robbins took over in the fourth inning and Colton Cangley closed the game in the seventh.
