Chico makes short work of Jacksboro

The Chico High School softball team finally got in some good weather for a district game. However, they didn't get to enjoy it for long as they sent Jacksboro back home early.

The Lady Dragons took advantage of nearly a dozen walks and used just six hits to beat the Tigers 13-3 in a game that ended in the fifth inning via the mercy rule.

"It was a district win so that makes it a good win, but we didn't play nearly as well as we needed to as the race for the playoffs is tight," said CHS coach Mike May. "We need to be steadily improving over these next six important games. We did enough to win but we didn't really hit the ball like we're capable of and we still managed to commit a couple of big errors that could have eliminated their runs."

Chico, which is in third place in district at 5-3, fell behind 1-0 after Jacksboro's first at-bat. However, it was quickly forgotten when the locals answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Lady Dragons were held scoreless in the second inning but were not quiet for long. The entire order batted in the third inning where they scored six runs to take a 9-1 lead.

The Tigers made the most of two Chico errors to score solo runs in the third and fourth innings to make it a 9-3 ball game.

The game came to a sudden end after CHS's last plate appearance. The hosts pushed four more runs across home plate.

Jessica Coffman had the biggest hit of the night as she blasted an RBI triple to the wall. Shelby Barnes was lethal with her bat as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run.

Rachel McKinley, Kela Allen and Delani Long scattered singles along the way.

Coffman, who knocked in three runs, also pitched another solid game. She threw a one-hitter and struck out 10 batters and walked three.

"Jessica pitched well so there were some bright spots, but we sure need to be more consistent at the plate and on the field," May added.
