The last six years of the Decatur and Bridgeport softball rivalry have been one-sided. The Lady Eagles have dominated the Sissies while racking up five district championships during a stretch in which BHS has not made the playoffs.
The tide is changing and Bridgeport proved that once again at home Friday night. The Sissies capitalized on three DHS errors and good hitting to beat their rivals 7-6 for the second straight year.
After falling behind 4-3 through four innings, the Sissies made one big inning count as the game winner.
They got a 2-for-3 hitting performance from Rachel Kresge which included a crucial RBI triple in a four-run fifth inning.
That was the last inning Bridgeport found home plate, but it didn't matter. The four runs put BHS in front 7-4, and it held Decatur scoreless in the last two innings to get the win.
The victory, which was the second straight for Bridgeport after losing six in a row, moved the Sissies to 2-6 in District 8-3A play and 5-15 overall.
Decatur, which is watching its playoff hopes fade away in falling to 3-5 and 13-14, fell behind early. Lacey Oates scored the first run of the game to put the team ahead 1-0.
The hosts had an answer. Bridgeport followed with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take its first lead.
Kresge scored the first of her two runs to spark the early rally and a 3-1 lead.
The next two innings were scoreless before the Lady Eagles struck again. They posted three earned runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 edge.
The Sissies followed with their big inning. Janie Foreman, who picked up the win in the circle, along with Brittany White, Casey Smith, Chelsea Jolly and Candice Woodard scattered hits through the first five innings to build a 7-4 lead.
Moranda Mares threw the final two innings for Bridgeport to pick up the win. She held Decatur to two hits and two unearned runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
