One inning dooms Boyd

For six innings Tuesday at home, the Boyd High School softball team gave Brock plenty of fits. However, it was the fourth inning that decided the game.

Brock's ability to lay down the bunts and Boyd's problems of fielding them was the difference. The Lady Yellowjackets allowed the first four runs of the game that inning and never recovered in a 6-3 loss to their rivals.

After battling through three scoreless innings, the Boyd defense had a small lapse in the top of the fourth frame. Back-to-back bunt singles set up a two-run double to give the Eagles a 2-0 edge. An error and two more singles eventually gave the visitors a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Yellowjackets fired back in the bottom half of the inning. Baylie Moran planted a two-out double into the centerfield wall and quickly scored when April Mandel blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it 4-2.

Brock got its lead-off batters on base in the fifth and sixth innings but the Lady Yellowjacket defense was stingy. Pitcher Kylie Lobdell, who struggled for strikeouts against the pesky hitters, played good defense to get out of the jams.

The Eagles ended the silence with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Three singles and an error led to a pair of runs and a 6-2 Brock advantage.

Boyd did not go down without a fight. Amanda Williams ripped a one-out single to left field and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Emily Bingham, which made it 6-3.

That was as close as it got as Brock closed the game with the final two outs.

The Lady Yellowjackets were coming off an impressive 11-1 win over Peaster last Friday. They scattered 10 hits in a game that was shortened via the mercy rule.

Boyd went to work early as it scored three times in the first inning and twice in the second to build a 5-0- lead. The locals put the game out of reach in the fourth inning with five more runs to make it 10-1.

Moran had the biggest bat of the day as she went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Maegan Tidwell smashed a home run to keep the runs coming. Mandel scattered two hits and had four RBI and three steals.

Lobdell was solid in the circle where she held Peaster to two hits while striking out five.
