There were about a dozen Decatur students grilling hot dogs and hamburgers from the backs of pickups behind the left-field wall Tuesday night during their team's game against Gainesville. It's not unusual for the fans to barbecue while watching the action perched above the fence line.
On the field, however, it was the Eagles grilling another district foe. Behind a spectacular performance by pitcher Tyler Robbins and a rare consistent defensive performance they soared to a 3-0 win over the Leopards.
It was the second shutout in three games for the much-improved young bunch. The defense played another good game but didn't have to make too many plays as Robbins was more impressive with every inning.
The senior righty retired the side in five of the seven innings, and only one runner got into scoring position, coming on a fourth-inning double. GHS never threatened to score again as Robbins racked up nine strikeouts.
The win lifted Decatur to 5-3 in District 8-3A play and 13-9 for the season. They are in third place and just one game out of first as Sanger and Argyle are tied for the lead at 6-2.
The Eagles got the only run they needed in the bottom of the second inning. That's where Chad Harrison and Andrew Gage ripped back-to-back one-out singles.
Harrison found his way home on a deep sacrifice fly by Robbins to make it a 1-0 ball game.
Robbins struck out five of the next eight batters he faced to preserve the small lead. That held until he got more run support in the sixth inning.
Robbins sent a lead-off home run over the left centerfield wall to make it a 2-0 contest. The Eagles added one more run later in the inning when Brennan Moore crushed an RBI single to left to make it 3-0.
Decatur, which has struggled defensively this season, came up with several big plays to get the shut out. Moore had a spectacular backwards catch in the first inning for an out.
