Dragons overcome mistakes in victory

Things did not look good for Chico High School Friday night in Henrietta. The young bunch committed six errors and gave the Bearcats plenty of offensive help to make things interesting.

The Dragons, however, made up for the miscues with timely hits and a well-executed play in the fourth inning. The offensive work was just enough to hold on for a 5-4 victory.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Chico found some offensive life in the middle frames to stage the comeback. Bubba Davidson smacked a two-out RBI single to even things at 3-3.

The Dragons continued to work their magic in the fifth inning. The key hit was a sacrifice bunt by Brad Farrell when he beat the tag at first base. He later scored the winning run.

"Brad's bunt was to perfection," said CHS coach Keith Toland. "In fact, it was so well played that we caught them off guard, and he beat it out for a single and set up the eventual winning run."

Kyle Hale and Tim Hicks made sure Chico was in position to get the winning run in the fifth. They both scattered two singles and scored once to lead the fourth-inning rally to tie the game.

"Overall, it was probably the best all-around game this year. I was especially pleased with our young guys for not falling apart when things didn't go exactly right," Toland said.

Rush Porter, Davidson and Farrell had the other three hits for the Dragons.

Seth Tate was on top of his game once again on the mound. He allowed just three hits in seven innings of work while striking out 11 batters.

"The kids did a fantastic job Friday night. We got another great job on the mound from Seth, who really bore down when needed and got several critical punch-outs," said Toland. "We got clutch hits at key times, and although our defense faltered at bat, we were able to get key outs when the time came."
