The Alvord High School baseball team is the real deal this season. Just ask City View.
The Bulldogs put on a show Friday night in Wichita Falls that brought a quick end to an ugly game.
They slapped around 12 hits and played near flawless defense in routing the Mustings 18-1.
The district contest only lasted five innings before officials called the game via the mercy rule. However, that was more than enough time to chalk up another victory.
More importantly, it secured Alvord's spot in the Cass 2A state playoffs.
It's only the second time this decade that the squad has seen an extended season - and no current player has been in a playoff game.
Alvord is all alone for the third and final playoff spot at 9-4. The locals also moved to 11-10 for the season with two games left to play before the playoffs.
The doubt is over, and the Bulldogs hope they are setting a new trend in their final year in District 9-2A with the Wichita Falls-area schools.
They sealed the deal thanks to a good performance on the mound by Trevor Hahn.
The hurler held City View to just one hit and three walks. He also struck out nine batters and tossed just 67 pitches.
Offensively, Alvord did its damage every other inning. The locals posted one run in the first inning before erupting for 10 in the third frame, aided by three CVHS errors. The crew put the game away with seven runs in the fifth.
Shane Watkins was an offensive superhero, and he was one single away from hitting the cycle. The senior slugger had a home run, triple and a double while racking up six runs batted in.
Asa Hand, who also has the best pitching record on the mound this year, did his damage with a bat this time around. He went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three times.
Colton Oldam and Hagen Ward slapped around two hits each to keep the bases warm and had two RBI apiece. Ross Houston, Justin Meador and Hahn also had singles to in the win, while Dusty Stachowiak, Kendall Nivens, T.J. Houston, Hahn and Meador also had knocked-in runs.
