Bridgeport High School baseball coach John Ward did not need to say much Friday night to get his troops fired up to play Gainesville. A victory would keep the team in third place with Decatur going into the final game of the season against the Eagles.
The Bulls took care of business like they have all season. They beat up on the GHS defense to the tune of 13 hits and took advantage of five errors to run away with a 10-1 road victory.
The win, along with Decatur's loss to Whitesboro, forced a third-place tie between the Wise County rivals. They were scheduled to meet each other Tuesday night in a loser-goes-home showdown in Decatur.
Pitcher Cameron Green made sure his team was in position to move into third place. The junior allowed just one run and six hits to keep the Leopards at bay.
His teammates took care of the rest. Corbin Green proved plenty of assistance as he littered the field with three hits and knocked in three runs.
The offensive help fueled a five-run third inning that gave Bridgeport a 6-0 lead. The Bulls, who got two hits and four RBI from Ricky Martinez, added two more scores in the fifth inning to move ahead 8-0.
Gainesville erased the shut out in the bottom half of the inning with one run on two hits to make it an 8-1 contest.
The Bulls tacked on two more runs for good measure in the sixth frame to complete the scoring.
Cameron Green helped his own cause as he produced a pair of singles. Dustin Krebs also got two hits but he scored all four times he got on base to lead the scoring.
Chase Pemberton had two hits and an RBI, while James Kilpatrick and Collin White had solo hits.
The win lifted Bridgeport to 7-6 in District 8-3A play and 11-14 for the season.
