Keeping up
Alvord loses to Olney, beats Chico

It was an up-and-down kind of week for the Alvord High School baseball team. The Bulldogs are holding on to the third-place playoff spot in a tight race that will likely go down to the final game.

They didn't gain any ground over the rest of the pack, but they did not lose much either. They lost to Olney on Tuesday before bouncing back on Saturday to beat Chico - but it ended via the 10-run mercy rule.

Pitcher Trevor Hahn was in top form in leading Alvord to an easy win over its rival from Chico. He struck out 12 Dragons and allowed just three hits en route to picking up another win.

Offensively, the Bulldogs were solid once again as they scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings. They racked up three in the fourth and fifth frames to get the 10-run lead.

Alvord's Clayton Shaw had the best day as he dished out three hits and drove in two runs. Hagen Ward didn't take it easy on CHS either as he ripped a double and a single.

Asa Hand and Colton Oldham also hit the ball hard with doubles. Ross Houston, Justin Meador and Shane Watkins scattered singles along the way.

David Herrera was the biggest threat for Chico as he went 2-for-3 at the plate. Seth Woods had the only other hit for the Dragons. He also took the loss on the mound for CHS where he had five strikeouts.

"Once again, we could not produce any offense. Our defense was sloppy with six errors and Alvord hit the ball well," said CHS coach Keith Toland.

"We need to turn it around quick if we expect a better record than last year. Our young kids will get a lot of playing time in our last few games to show me what they can do. They are our future and I want them to gain all the experience and confidence they can for next year."

There wasn't as much offense for Alvord against Olney. Dustin Stachowiak, Oldham, Houston and Meador had the only hits of the day for Alvord.

The Cubs, however, had some success at the plate where they dished out 10 hits. The hosts scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game in the books.

Hand took the loss on the Hill for the Bulldogs. He struck out eight batters, threw 54 strikes, 85 pitches and his record slipped to 5-2 for the season.
