There have been more downs than ups this season for the Bridgeport High School softball team. A recent win over rival Decatur had been one of the bright spots so far.
However, the Sissies' performance at home Saturday against Sanger may have topped the list. They punished the Sanger defense with a season-high 18 hits, just enough to make up for four errors en route to an 8-7 victory.
Bridgeport's Chelsea Jolly had a lot to do with the late-inning heroics. She went 4-for-5 at the plate and helped score five runs in the last two innings to complete the come-from-behind win.
"Every batter in the lineup marked at least one hit," said an elated coach Heath Iglesias.
The Indians, who were in first place before the loss, made it look like it would be a quick night. They scored three times in the first inning to take the early advantage.
Bridgeport never went away. The locals scored once in the second, fourth and fifth innings to keep it close and trailed 5-3.
The Sissies were just getting started. They scored twice in the sixth inning to make it a one-run game, 6-5.
Sanger, however, scored two more runs in the top of the last inning to move back ahead 7-5. Bridgeport was one better as it scored three times in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
Rachel Kresge, Candice Woodard, Bailey Jones, Amanda Huff, Janie Foreman and Casey Smith all scattered two hits each while Lindsey North and Brittany White had one hit. All 18 hits were singles which left Sanger on the run all afternoon.
Foreman got the win in the circle where she struck out nine batters in seven innings of work and allowed four earned runs.
The Sissies were not as fortunate on Tuesday when Argyle visited Wise County. They out-hit the Eagles 7-6 but did not outscore them in a 4-2 loss.
Jones had the biggest bat of the game as she smashed a triple and a double to lead the way. Huff also ripped a pair of singles.
Smith took the loss in the circle where she allowed two earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts.
Bridgeport is now 3-9 in District 8-3A play and 5-18 overall going into the final week of the season.
