Panthers win three in a row

When things weren't looking very good for the Paradise High School baseball team, the Wise County bunch did something about it.

The Panthers combined solid pitching and good defense and the results could not have been better. They defeated Boyd, Peaster and Cisco within seven days to pull back into third place in District 10-2A.

The closest game was Friday night against nemesis Boyd. The Panthers made a first-inning score stand as the game winner as they edged the Yellowjackets 1-0.

Kaleb Read went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Paradise. However, it was his RBI single in the first inning that scored Justin Bridges that served as the game winner.

Read made his own RBI stand as the deciding factor after he worked his magic on the mound. He held Boyd to just two hits and struck out six batters to get the win.

"We played outstanding defense and Kaleb pitched an outstanding game," said PHS coach Scott Broussard.

Things were not quite as close Friday night in Peaster. That's where the Panthers scattered 12 hits and rallied from an early deficit to beat the Greyhounds 8-3.

Paradise trailed 2-0 after one inning but it was short-lived. The locals answered with six runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead that was safe.

The offensive outburst was sparked by a three-run home run by Bridges. The offense was evenly distributed throughout the lineup as Dusty Galbreaith, Nick Pike, P.J. Fuller, Toi Glover, Caleb Read, Eric Villanueaba and Read also scored once and had one hit each.

Glover pitched the first four innings and picked up the win for Paradise. Kaleb Read and Pike filled in the rest of the way.

Paradise also picked up a solid win last weekend against Cisco. Glover threw a five-hitter with no walks in a 4-1 victory.

Fuller dished out two hits and Galbreaith scored twice to lead the offense.

The Panthers are now 6-4 in district play and 12-8 for the season. They have four games left to secure a spot in the state playoffs.
