Alvord inches closer to playoffs

After falling behind 2-0 early in Tuesday's home game against Henrietta, the Alvord High School baseball team did not seem fazed. In fact, it was just the calm before the storm for the hosts.

The Bulldogs scored in four of the last five innings to hold off the Bearcats in a 9-6 victory. They saved their best for last.

Colton Oldham, who pounced on the Henrietta defense with two doubles, finished with four runs batted in. His final runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning where Alvord scored three times to put the game away after holding on to a slim 6-5 lead.

The win lifted Alvord to 10-10 for the season, but more importantly, 8-4 in District 9-2A play. The locals lead Nocona and Jacksboro for the third and final playoff spot with two games left to play.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs got their bats going. They scored once in the second inning to cut the deficit in half.

Henrietta, however, posted two more runs in the third inning to move ahead 4-1. The Bulldogs, who got a double from Clayton Shaw, scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it a one-run game again at 4-3.

The Bearcats got an unearned run in the fourth inning to creep ahead 5-3. The Bulldogs had an answer thanks to hits from Hagen Ward, Justin Meador, Asa Hand and Shane Watkins as they scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead.

Dustin Stachowiak, Watkins and Shaw combined for four RBI down the stretch.

Hand picked up his sixth win on the mound where 59 of his 100 pitches were strikes. He surrendered 10 hits and four walks with 11 strikeouts.
