Bridgeport High School softball coach Heath Iglesias knew he had his hands full Tuesday when his bunch had to travel to Montague County to face Bowie. It was a task bigger than the rebuilding Sissies could handle.
The Jackrabbits, who wrapped up the District 8-3A championship a year after not making the playoffs, combined good pitching and defense to keep the Sissies at bay. They were held to just three hits and committed five errors in a 15-1 loss that ended in the fifth inning via the mercy rule.
The loss dropped Bridgeport to 3-10 in district play and 6-19 for the season. Bowie moved to 12-1 and 22-3, respectively.
Bowie did not waste any time taking the lead in its final home game of the season. The hosts scored five times in their first at bat and never trailed.
The Sissies struggled to get anything going in the first four innings. They managed one run in the fifth frame but it was not enough to avoid an early end to the game.
Janie Foreman got one of Bridgeport's three hits. She also scored the only run when Kelly Kemp ripped a single in the fifth inning to erase the shutout.
Amanda Huff, who was coming off a four-hit showing last week, had the only other hit for the locals.
