The Northwest High School softball team continues to prove that tradition doesn't graduate. The group has faced a major reloading season with a new starting pitcher and a defense that has every player in a new position.
One thing that has not changed is results. The Lady Texans delivered another weekly sweep of District 5-5A teams last week with wins over Keller and Keller Central high schools.
The biggest game of the week was Saturday against Keller, the only team that has battled Northwest for the last four district championships. It took an extra inning to decide the winner, but by the Lady Texans came through again with a 4-3 home victory.
Both teams dished out eight hits each, but it was mistakes that nearly made the difference. NHS committed a district-high four errors which allowed Keller to take the first lead of the night.
The rivals battled through four scoreless innings before a run crossed home plate. The Indians scored once in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 2-0 contest.
The Lady Texans, however, scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to even things up.
After a scoreless seventh frame, Keller scored once in the top of the eighth inning. Northwest answered again with two in the bottom half to get the win. Christin Robertson and Natalie Nimmo helped ignite the offensive late in the game.
Northwest pitcher Erinn Jayjohn picked up the win and moved her record to 13-2 for the year.
The Lady Texans had a challenge on Thursday as well when Keller Central proved a test. Jayjohn picked up the win again and had a double to lead the offense in a 6-4 road win.
Northwest trailed 1-0 after one inning but slowly took control of the game. The locals tied the game in the second inning and scored four times in the fourth and once in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
The Lady Texans had three errors which allowed the Chargers to stay in the game.
Northwest is now 8-0- in district play and two games in first place.
