Paradise loses shootout

A game that had the potential to be a pitcher's duel turned into an offensive showdown between the Paradise and Brock high school softball teams.

The teams combined for 23 hits in a game that took more than two hours to finish.

The difference in the game was the Eagles' ability to score with runners on base. They scored 11 runs combined in the first and last innings and not much in-between but held on to beat Paradise 14-9 at home.

The Lady Panthers fell behind 6-0 after just one inning and had to play catch-up the rest of the night. It nearly worked as they scored once in the fourth inning and three more times in the fifth frame to make it a 6-5 ball game.

Brock, however, answered with five runs in its final plate appearance to get the win.

Paradise beat up on the Eagle defense all night. Jessica Wood had something to do with it as she crushed two home runs in the offensive assault. Baleigh Newman, who took care of the pitching for PHS, also sent one over the fence.

Casey Fletcher smacked a double to get into scoring position as well.
