Sissies rout Gainesville for first win

It's been a challenging first two months of the season for the Bridgeport High School softball team. Young players, a new coach and a tough schedule have made things difficult this season.

The Sissies lost their first six district games and will need a miracle to make the playoffs. However, none of that mattered in Gainesville Tuesday night when they put on an offensive display in a 14-8 victory.

It was arguably the best showing of the season for this young bunch - both offensively and defensively. Bridgeport beat up on the Leopard pitching staff for a season-high 17 hits while committing just one error.

The Sissies trailed 6-1 after four innings, and it appeared their first district win was going to have to wait a little longer. That was not the case and Janie Foreman helped change the momentum.

The junior took over pitching duties in the bottom of the fourth inning and kept GHS at bay. Meanwhile, her team came up with more than enough offense in the last three innings to make it a victorious night.

Brittany White was a big reason for the huge offensive night. She went 3-for-5 at the plate, knocked in four runs, scored twice and had a triple and a double.

White's contribution made a difference down the stretch. Bridgeport scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take its first lead of the game at 7-6.

The Sissies were far from finished. They racked up four more runs in the sixth inning to move ahead 11-6 and scored three more in the final frame to make it 14-6.

Gainesville tagged Foreman for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as she picked up her first win of the year in the circle.

The offense was distributed all over the lineup. Chelsea Jolly, Bailey Jones and Moranda Mares all went 3-for-5 at the plate. Mares, who pitched the first two innings, also had two stolen bases as well as two RBIs. Both Jolly and Jones scored all three times they were on base.

Foreman dished out two singles and knocked in three runs to help the own cause. Candice Woodard also had a single to keep rally alive.

Bridgeport is now 1-6 in District 8-3A play and 4-15 overall. The group faced Decatur Friday night in an attempt to make it two wins in a row.
