Decatur High School softball coach Scott McTee was all smiles after one week of district play. His team won its first three games and were enjoying life atop the standings.
In just a matter of two days, however, the Lady Eagles lost twice and are now fighting for their playoff lives. They dropped a pair of defensive nightmares to Argyle and Pilot Point which snapped their winning streak.
Decatur committed a season-high eight errors Monday at home against Argyle but did not lose the game until the final inning. That's where they were throttled for 11 runs in the top of the seventh in a 19-7 loss.
"We battled the entire game, and I thought we had a great chance going into the sixth inning, but we just couldn't get it done," said McTee. "Then in the seventh we just fell apart. They put the ball in play and we could not stop them."
The Lady Eagles fell behind 6-1 before fighting back. They finally got some help in the bottom of the third inning when J.J. Addington, who went 3-for-4 for the game, helped lead a three-run rally to make it 6-4.
Argyle scored once in the next two innings to move back ahead by five. Decatur, however, had another three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one run at 8-7.
The game was anything but a defensive showcase. Both teams combined for 28 hits - 18 for Argyle - and had 12 total errors.
Addington had the biggest bat of the day as she scored twice, smacked a triple and had two RBI. Mercy Staley scattered two hits, scored twice and had two stolen bases.
Megan Dittrich had the hardest hit ball of the game when she ripped a two-run triple. She also took the loss in the circle where she allowed 15 earned runs on 18 hits and struck out four.
The loss dropped Decatur to 3-2 in District 8-3A play and 9-9 overall.
The downward spiral started on Saturday when the Lady Eagles got lit up on their home turf by Pilot Point. The Bearcats scored eight runs in the sixth inning to blow open a close game in a 16-4 win.
"We flat got outplayed today. We weren't patient enough at the plate and our pitching wasn't sharp today," said McTee. "They hit the ball well and did what needed to be done to win, and we did not respond.
Addington did not disappoint on offense where she blasted an RBI double. She scored half of DHS's runs.
Lyndsey Hicks scored Decatur's other two runs and had one hit and two stolen bases. Dittrich and Staley had the only other hits for the Lady Eagles.
"These last two games have been tough but we have to put them behind us and continue to play hard. We're still in the district race but we have to take care of business from here on out. Our district's tough but we knew that before the season started, so there is no room for excuses - we have to start doing things the right way in order to be successful."
