Putting on the hits
Rachel McKinley goes 4-for-4 in leading Chico past Alvord

Watching Chico High School softball coach Mike May during Monday's rival game against Alvord may have been a little deceiving. His frustrations with his team's base-running decisions made him a little more vocal than normal.

The Lady Dragons were tagged out four times on the base paths for "wrong decisions." However, they made up for it with solid hitting and four Alvord errors to pull way for a 6-4 victory.

Chico scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to even the game at 1-1. However, May's crew could have added two more if not for the second base running miscue of the game which ended the inning when Alvord catcher Maddison Kinsey easily tagged a runner out at home.

Though his team managed to tie the game, May got his point across as the team prepared to go back onto the field to play defense.

"How do you expect to win the game if you don't pay attention," he hollered.

He finally got their attention and it paid off in the final three innings. Chico slugger Rachel McKinley, who rocked Alvord with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, had a lot to do with it as she scored three of the final runs.

The win lifted Chico to 4-1 in District 9-2A and just one game out of first-place City View. Alvord slipped to 2-3 in league play.

The Lady Dragons got runners in scoring position in the first inning and threatened to jump ahead quickly. AHS freshman pitcher Ainsley Shaffer, however, got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

She got out of another scoring threat in the second frame when CHS's Rikki Richardson ripped a lead-off double to right field. But Ainsley retired the next three batters.

The Lady Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a lead-off single by Chelsi Redman. The senior worked her way around the bases and scored on a Chico error to make it 1-0.

Chico had an answer in the third inning. McKinley smacked her second hit of the day to left field and later scored after a bunt single by Jessica Coffman made it 1-1.

The tie was short-lived when Alvord reclaimed its lead with a solo run in the bottom half of the frame. Kinsey hammered a lead-off single and eventually found home on a two-out single by Redman to make it 2-1.

Alvord threatened again in the fourth inning with runners in scoring position. Shortstop Stephanie Stephens and first baseman Shelby Barnes got CHS out of the jam with big defensive plays.

The Lady Dragons got offensive in the fifth inning when Kela Allen and McKinley scattered consecutive singles with no outs. Barnes blasted a one-out RBI single to score McKinley and tie the game at 2-2.

Chico took its first lead of the afternoon when Kacie Walker drew a bases-loaded walk to score Allen and make it a 3-2 ball game.

Alvord's Alissa Lowrance came through in the bottom of the batting order in the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3. She laced a lead-off double to center field and scored two outs later on a Chico error.

Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh which forced one extra inning of play.

That was all the time the Lady Dragons needed. Shanna Fatheree got things started with a single to right field. An error on the play allowed her to make it to third base.

McKinley did not leave her teammate standing around long when she pounded an RBI single to center field to make it 4-3. Allen walked and scored along with McKinley on a hit by Barnes to put Chico ahead 6-3.

The Lady Bulldogs were not able to bounce back at the top of the batting order in the eighth inning. Enis got on base by an error and eventually scored on an RBI single by Kinsey to make it 6-4.

Coffman put the game away after that. The junior got the last two batters to ground out to pick up the win.
