The Mineral Wells Chamber of Commerce/Chicken Express All-Star Basketball Classic brings together the best of the area's small-school talent to be showcased in front of college coaches. Five Wise County athletes, four of which earned Most Valuable Player honors this year, have been named to the all-star lineups and will play in the featured game Saturday night at Mineral Wells High School.
The girls' team will feature four local headliners as Lacey Oates of Decatur, Amanda Williams and Emily Bingham of Boyd and Maddison Kinsey of Alvord received invitations. The only Wise guy headed to the event is Chico's Hayden Eubanks.
The 19th annual event is North Texas' oldest and most recognizable event of its kind. The players were chosen from coaches' nominations from 50 different schools in 14 surrounding counties.
Two of the standouts are from Boyd, the most successful program in Wise County over the last four years. Williams and Bingham were part of a four-year run that included more than 100 wins and two regional tournament appearances.
Williams started every game in high school. She was named the Defensive Player of the Year in Wise County and District 10-2A.
Bingham is the most improved player in Wise County this season. She ranked third in steals and had the third most three-pointers in the county.
Oates started on the varsity all four years of high school and went out with a bang as a senior as she was named Offensive Player of the Year for Wise County and the District 8-3A MVP. She put up the best numbers of her career while leading Decatur to the Regional Quarterfinals for only the second time this decade.
The DHS senior averaged 14 points, 4.9 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 3.9 steals a game.
Kinsey is another standout who started every game in four years of high school. She broke seven school records and has been selected to three all-star games this year.
The all-time Alvord rebounding and scoring leader was the Wise County Player of the Year and the District 9-2A MVP. She averaged 19.1 points and 14 rebounds a game and also has a school record of 1,794 career rebounds.
Eubanks put up some impressive numbers his senior year and was an easy choice for the all-star team. The All-Wise County Player of the Year averaged 18.3 points and 14.1 rebound a game this year and also shot 62 percent from the field and had 75 steals.
The Weatherford College coaching staff will lead the East teams which featured all the Wise County stars. The girls' game will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 8 p.m. There will be a three-point contest at the halftime of each game.
