Daugherty dominates
Bridgeport senior will join Chico star at state

Kassie Daugherty said she did not have the best of practices last week in preparation for the Class 3A, Region I meet this weekend. She said most of her throws were well short of the personal-best mark of 132 feet that she recorded at the qualifiers in Glen Rose last weekend.

The Bridgeport senior stepped up when needed Friday morning in Odessa. Daugherty, a three-time regional qualifier, won her second straight regional championship on her fifth of six throws.

Ranked second going into the final round, Daugherty launched her winning throw of 131 feet, 4 inches. She beat out top-ranked Cristi Jackson of Clyde by almost 9 feet as she finished second at 121-9.

"I had a good week of practice," said Daugherty. "I didn't throw in the 130s, but I felt good."

The top two athletes in each event qualify for the Texas state championships in Austin May 9-10. The first three finishers advanced out of district to compete at this weekend's regional meets.

The only other local athlete to compete in Odessa Friday morning was Bridgeport's Kaitlyn Waynen. The junior finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 16-11.

Chico standout Hayden Eubanks will be joining Daugherty in Austin in two weeks. The senior also won the regional discus championship Friday morning at the Class 2A showdown in Stephenville.

Eubanks won the title with a heave of 167-8. The three-year letterman will be making his second straight trip to Austin.

Alvord's Paige Klein fell just shy of a state ticket in the triple jump. The junior had a leap of 16-11.

All running events were held through the afternoon and evening at both meets.
