Impressionable finish
Decatur delivers unexpected performance in the district showdown

For the second straight year the Decatur High School boys' track team fell shy of winning the district championship. That was hard to believe based on the amount of celebrating by Decatur athletes, coaches and fans at Monday night's 8-3A finals in Sanger.

The Eagles turned in several spectacular performances on the track to rack up several regional bids. In fact, they qualified for the Class 3A, Region I meet in Odessa later this month in nine events which included all three relays.

Decatur racked up 133 points to finish second in the team standings and knocked off Sanger after last year's disappointing finish with 102. Argyle won the title with 210 points.

"We thought we had a good chance to get the 800 relay out but to get all three is awfully good," said DHS coach Dennis Cobb. "To see a group of guys all have personal bests on the same day is just special. It really brightens your day."

Chad Harrison was a name heard often on the intercom. The junior had a remarkable day as he qualified in four events.

In what has been described as one of the best races in his prep career, Harrison secured second place in the 1600-meter relay with one of the best finishes of the day. Trailing Sanger in the final 100 meters, Harrison fed off the energy of the loud crowd to pull in front at the end in a photo finish.

The quartet was in position to earn a regional bid thanks to the first three legs of Matt Huddleston, Eliuth Sanchez and Cole Fuller who joined Harrison in posting a time of 3 minutes, 28.7 seconds - just a fraction of a second ahead of Sanger at 3:28.9.

The biggest surprise of the day was the 800 relay team. The crew of Josh Trant, Reece Madden, Zack Zamzow and Harrison won the district championship at 1:30.98, which was the second fastest time in school history.

Bridgeport was no slouch in the event. The team of Bryan Seymore, Jace Hudson, Austin Blevins and Trevor Schuett was third in the event at 1:33.57 and is headed to regionals where the top three in every event meet up for a fight for state bids.

Harrison is also on his way to Odessa in two field events. He won the district title in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 7.5 inches. He will be joined by Madden in West Texas as he was second and just two inches back at 20-5.5

Harrison was also second in the triple jump where he cleared 43-2.

Also in field events, DHS's Tim Metts was the best in the high jump where he cleared 6-3.

Brennon Lemieux, a regional and state qualifier last year, is going back to regionals after winning the 110 hurdles with a personal record of 14.85 seconds. DHS's Ryon Yazell was fifth at 15.92.

Trant was the second fastest in the 100 where he was clocked at 10.57 seconds, while the 400 relay team of Huddleston, Zamzow, Trant and Madden was third in a photo finish at 43.45 seconds.

Huddleston, who impressed coaches all day, took second place in the 400 with a personal record of 50.90 seconds. He beat out Argyle's standout for the silver medal.

The top three in each event advance to regionals April 25-26 in Odessa.
