For the second straight year Wise County will have a limited number of girls attending the Class 3A, Region I track and field meet in Odessa. Four total - two each from Decatur and Bridgeport high schools - came through with top-three performances at the District 8-3A finals in Sanger over the weekend.
Cynthia Carrillo and Cassie Partridge are West-Texas bound and will represent Decatur, while Bridgeport's Kassie Daugherty and Kaitlyn Waynen are both making return trips to regionals.
The Lady Eagles had a little more depth than the Sissies this season and that was also the difference in the team standings. DHS finished fifth overall with 50.5 points, just ahead of the Sissies in sixth at 45.
Carrillo led the way for Decatur as she qualified for regionals in two events with a pair of second-place finishes. She was right behind Argyle's Kristie Krueger in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 27.1 seconds.
Carrillo wasn't finished. The talented junior later shocked all-star runner Colbea Harris of Argyle in the 1,600. The Lady Eagle finished behind Krueger for the top spot but took second after clocking a 5:19.51, just ahead of Harris at 5:22.76.
Partridge will be joining Carrillo in Odessa thanks to a personal-best throw in shot put. The junior took third place in the event with a heave of 36 feet, 6 inches to edge out Bridgeport's Haley Meekins at 35-9 for the final regional spot.
Decatur coach David Park was pleased with his team's performance despite just getting two out of district.
"When you look at the overall picture, we did a good job. We only lose one senior, and we have seven freshmen we pulled from the junior varsity that made it to the finals. That's not a bad deal," he said. "To have a young team step up and have a chance in the finals to go to regionals is something to be happy about. The next few years look good for us."
Daugherty had the best local finish in the event as she captured second-place honors with a toss of 37-4. She missed the gold by less than three inches.
She did not fall short of first place in the discus where she easily won the district championship with a throw of 123-2. Daugherty advanced to the state finals in the same event last season.
Waynen is going in the 400 where she posted a second-place time of 1:00.64 where she was edged in a photo finish for the title by Jessica Bonfield from Argyle. She was also third in the long jump where she soared 15-11.5
The regional meet will be April 25-26 at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.
