The Alvord High School boys' track team doesn't usually make a lot of noise at the district track meet. This year, however, the group turned in one of their best performances in recent years and have nine regional qualifiers to prove it.
The Bulldogs won two events, qualified in all three relay events and had a couple of athletes miss the cut by just one spot at Tuesday's District 9-2A championships in Chico. In the end, Alvord finished third in the team standings with 93 points. Olney won the title with 162.5 followed by Holliday at 154.5.
Chico, which finished sixth among eight teams with 33 points, was led by Hayden Eubanks and Kyler Hale. Both standouts will represent CHS at the regional meet April 25-26 in Stephenville.
The top three finishers in each event advance to the regional meet. That's where the top two individuals will advance to the state championships May 9-11
It was a good day for Alvord on the track where the locals were consistent in relays. Brendan Dane and Randall Perez had a lot to do with it as they were a part of all three regional-qualifying races.
The duo joined Travis Montgomery and Shane Watkins to take second in the 800 with a time of 1 minute, 31 seconds and third in the 400 where the foursome was clocked at 43.49 seconds.
Trevor Hartfield and Hagen Ward teamed up with Dane and Perez in the 1,600 relay to take third-place honors with a time of 3:34.9.
The Bulldogs struck gold twice on the oval where Mauricio Rivera and Montgomery were the district's best. Rivera had the fastest time in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:03, while Montgomery was untouchable in the 200 at 21.73 seconds.
Alvord had two athletes qualify in field events with a pair of third-place showings. Travis Wright recorded a height of 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump and Ward had a distance of 40-6 in the triple jump.
Eubanks will once again be the headliner from Chico. The senior standout is making his third regional appearance as he qualified in two events once again.
The standout senior won the discus by more than 20 feet where he had a toss of 160-0.75. Eubanks also took first place in the shot put with a heave of 46-1.75, nearly two feet ahead of Jacksboro's Kole Weldon.
Hale will join Eubanks in Stephenville after he took third place in both the 100 and 200 meter dash events. He finished the 100 meters with a time of 11.31 seconds, just a fraction of a second ahead of Olney's Cord Barrienter at 11.38. His sliver performance in the 200 meter race was 22.95.
