Alvord track standout Paige Klein has had some good days in her decorated career. What the junior did at this week's District 9-2A track and field meet in Chico could hardly be described as good - probably more likely great.
Klein won all five of her events - two of which shattered school records - and accounted for nearly a third of all the points for the Lady Bulldogs. That was more than enough to lead Alvord to the district championship that it has not earned in the last couple of years with 153 points.
The Lady Bulldogs, who finished ahead of runner-up Olney at 123 points and City View at 108, had several good performances to secure the title. The Lady Bulldogs had 12 athletes finish in the top three to qualify for the Class 2A, Region II meet to be held in Stephenville April 25-26. That's where the top three finishers in each event will compete for the right to move on to state in May.
Chico had a handful of athletes compete at the district finals, but only one on the girls' side is headed to regionals. Melanie Gates, in only her second meet of the season after battling an illness, finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet, 9 inches.
The day, however, belonged to Klein as she won the maximum number of events an athlete can enter and captured all the first places for Alvord. She was most impressive on the track where she rewrote the Alvord record book twice.
Klein set a new mark in the 100-meter dash prelims where she finished in a blazing time of 11.92 seconds. She went on break the record in the 400 where she clocked a 58.7, which she won by four seconds over City View's Lee Eickman.
The record setter also won the 200 in 26.0 seconds, and went one to strike gold in the long jump at 16-11.25 and the triple jump with a distance of 34-7.
The Lady Bulldogs will also advance to regionals in all three relays where they were third three times. The 400 quartet of Sam Rogers, Jennifer Endsley, Morgan Rhine and Kailey Watkins crossed the finish line at 52.51.
The 800 crew posted a time of 1:52:00 which features Whitney Enis, Emily Atkinson, Rhine and Enis. Maria Luna, Kaela Beidiger, Atkinson and Rogers stopped the clock at 4:26.32 in the 1600 relay.
Maddison Kinsey is making a return trip to regionals in the 100 hurdles after she posted a second-place time of 16.22. Macie Dane also took the silver in the 3,200 race where she finished her eight laps in 12:54.03, just ahead of teammate and regional qualifier Caly Rangel at 13:09.99.
Also moving on to regionals for Alvord is Biediger (300 hurdles), Watkins (100) and Enis (800).
Chico's Shelby Collins just missed the regional cut in two of her events. She was fourth in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 8 inches and in the 400 where she finished fifth at 1:06.09.
