Boyd qualifies 14 for next week's regional showdown

The finale of the District 10-2A track meet last Wednesday in Godley was anything but easy for Boyd High School. The last few hours of the event took place in a steady rain that later produced damaging hail across the Metroplex.

Boyd did a little storming of its own as it had 14 athletes finish in the top three of their events to qualify for regionals next week. The boys, however, did most of the damage as 10 of them are moving on to the next round as they search for a ticket to state May 9-10.

The Yellowjackets were among the best in seven events at the district showdown. They scored enough points to take third in the team standings behind champion Cisco and runner-up Godley.

No one had a day quite like Shane Neyens. His name will be heard a few times in Stephenville next week as he advances in three events and won the only gold medal for Boyd.

Neyens won the district championships in the 300-meter hurdles with a time 39.48 seconds. His teammate, Tim Fleming, is going as well after he took second in the 110 hurdles at 15.9.

Neyens is also a part of two relay teams going to regionals for Boyd. He joined Colton Lyon, Tory Sanderson and Fleming to take second in the 400 in 44.9 seconds.

Sanderson played a big role in the success as well as he was a part of all the regional-qualifying relay teams. He will run with Trent Carter, Seth Tate and Neyens in the 1600 after they were second at district with a mark of 3:34.72.

The quartet of Neil Livingston, Jesse Ricketts, Tate and Sanderson were third in the 800 relay where they clocked a 1:36.6.

Sanderson will compete in four events as he also earned third place in the triple jump where he cleared 40 feet, 0.5 inches. John Steel is making the trip in shot put thanks to his third-place throw of 45-0.

On the girls' side, Desirea Nelson and Chloe Warren had the highest finishes for Boyd as they both earned second-place honors. Nelson was second best in pole vault while Warren was the same in the 300 hurdles.

The top performer for the Lady Yellowjackets was Katy Mark. She is going to regionals in the 800 and 1600 where she captured third place in Godley.

Kasey Wood is the only other Boyd qualifier, and she took third place in discus.
