Southlake dominates, Texans qualify

It came as no surprise that Southlake won both the girls' and boys' team titles at the District 5-5A track and field championships Tuesday in Justin. All eight teams had a shot at first place after the first day, but the Dragons literally ran away with it on the final day behind a spectacular showing in the running finals.

Northwest had its share of success as well as the Lady Texans were fourth overall and the NHS boys took home fifth. However, the season is far from over as 10 local athletes - four boys and six girls - finished in the top three of their events to earn a trip to next weekend's regional finals in Lubbock.

The Lady Texans captured the only gold for Northwest as they won two events to finish with 90 points in the team standings. They finished just shy of third-place Keller with 102 points.

India Williams had a good meet as she is moving on to regionals in two events. She won the district championship in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.18 seconds and was also third in the 200 where she was clocked at 25.96.

Northwest softball standout Taylor Namey will be making the trip to West Texas in two events as well. She won the shot put title with a heave of 36 feet, 1.75 inches.

Namey was also one of the best in discus where she took second place with a toss of 112-1. She was right behind champion Kaitlin Nichols at 113-4.

Cynthia McCullum is going back to regionals in high jump where she cleared 5-4, while teammate Christina Osondu was third in the long jump with a distance of 16-4.5.

Northwest also had two pole vaulters earn tickets to Lubbock. Angela Rabalais and Maren Fossem both cleared 10-0 to finish second and third, respectively.

The top finish on the boys' side for Northwest came from Chris Bain. He captured second-place honors in the 100 with a time of 11.12 seconds to earn his first trip to regionals.

Britt Koestler is making a return trip to Lubbock as he qualified in two events with third-place performances. He clocked a 9:45.80 in the 3,200 and came in at 4:32.18 in the 1,600. He finished behind nationally-ranked and defending state champion Colby Lowe of Southlake.

Bain and Koestler will have two of their friends join them after they finished third in their events. Trevor Benton posted a time of 51.59 in the 400, while Justin Kendrick secured his ticket in discus.
