Bridgeport 56, Gainesville 14

The Bridgeport Bulls gored their way into the Class 3-A playoffs Friday with a decisive 56-14 victory over the Gainesville Leopards at Bull Memorial Stadium.

The victory means Bridgeport will face Sweetwater in a bi-district game Friday night in Stephenville. Sweetwater defeated Breckenridge 25-14 in the Mustang's final game of the regular season.

The Bulls ended the season tied for first place in district with the Decatur Eagles with a 4-1 record. Overall, Bridgeport had a regular season record of 7-3.

The Bulls were relentless in their victory over Gainesville, scoring 21 points in both the first and second quarters and capping the night with seven points in each of the final two periods.

It was a spectacular night for running back Aaron Holt who scored three touchdowns on runs of 12, 28 and 3 yards while Antonio Martinez added extra points after every Bridgeport touchdown.

Also adding points for the Bulls were John Arrington who snared a seven-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Green in the first quarter, Jordan Daniels who scored on a 52-yard run in the first quarter, Trevor Schuett who tagged a one-yard run in the second and Austin Blevins who scored on a five yard run in the second quarter.

The Bridgeport defense even got into the scoring with less than a minute left in the game when Steven Maroney recovered a Leopard fumble in the end zone for another six points.

It's been a tough year for Gainesville, once one of the state's leading 3-A teams. Zach McFarlin scored both touchdowns for the Leopards on runs of 52 and 33 yards. For the night, McFarlin picked up 142 yards on 12 carries. Nathan Cardenas added extra points to each touchdown.

Gainesville ended the year with a 1-4 district record and 1-9 for the season, with their only victory being over the Sanger Indians.
