One week after the Bridgeport High School football team touched Decatur for 44 points, the Bulls found themselves one quarter away from the biggest upset of the season in District 8-3A Friday night against Bowie.
Bridgeport, which trailed for most of the night, scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to overcome the loss of tailback Aaron Holt to leap past the Jackrabbits 35-17.
Bowie, which got 150 yards rushing and 118 yards passing by Cody McMurray, jumped out to a 17-14 halftime lead. The advantage held until the fourth period where the Bulls found their offensive life.
Receiver James Kilpatrick, who finished with six catches and 74 yards, ran in a 6-yard touchdown early in the fourth frame. Antonio Martinez was perfect on all five kicks for the night and put Bridgeport ahead 21-17.
The Bulls were far from finished. They stopped Bowie on its next possession and then took the ball downfield where backup running back Jordan Daniel scored on a 15-yard run to make it a 28-17 ballgame.
Quarterback Cameron Green, who rushed for 120 yards and passed for another 147, tacked on an insurance score in the final minutes when he found the end zone on an 18-yard run to complete the scoring.
The win lifted Bridgeport to 1-1 in district play and 4-3 for the season. Bowie, meanwhile, slipped to 0-2 and 1-6 respectively.
Bowie struck first in the contest when kicker Seth Garza split the uprights on a 23-yard field goal.
The lead was short-lived when Bridgeport got the ball back. Green connected with Kilpatrick on a 10-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulls their first lead at 7-3.
The Jackrabbits made good use of their final possession of the first period. McMurray danced into the end zone on a 20-yard touchdown run and Garza added the extra point to make it a 10-7 Bowie lead.
The lead reached 10 in the second quarter when Josh Mowery scored on a 7-yard run to make it 17-7.
The Bulls responded before halftime. Green and Kilpatrick hooked up again for a 5-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to three at halftime, 17-14.
Holt injured his collar bone in the first half and never returned to the game. The extent of his injury was unknown at press time.
