The Northwest Texans thrilled a homecoming crowd Friday with a 24-21 victory over Mansfield Timberview to rack up their first win of the season.
The Northwest kicking game made the difference as Michael Huskey hit three field goals and Drew Ashley carried the pigskin 29 times for 180 yards including a 23-yard touchdown run with 2:17 left in the game. After the touchdown, Northwest quarterback Brysen Curb hit Ty Moss for a two-point conversion. It was a good night for Curb who completed 13 of 28 passes for 120 yards. Travis Hardy caught four of them for 25 yards.
With 45 seconds left, Texan defender Ricky Broxton intercepted a Timberview pass on the three yard line to seal the victory.
"Our guys never gave up," said Northwest Coach Leonard McAngus. "Our conditioning really showed in the fourth quarter."
Next week Northwest travels to Keller to begin district play. The Indians lost to Flower Mound Marcus 23-0 Friday.
